Sometimes, we think the stories of God speaking to people are only in the Bible. They are simply old stories from a long time ago, beyond us now.

But God is still talking today.

He is still showing His love and giving guidance to His children.

He is still revealing His truth to a new generation.

Virginia Metzler’s Our God Still Speaks is a powerful, inspirational Christian book for young adults. It shows us that God is still present and active in our world today. With her true stories from a missionary’s life, she proves that God listens, answers, and leads us. Just like He did for people in the Bible.

Passing faith to youth starts with sharing these real-life miracles.

How God Spoke to Virginia Metzler

Virginia Metzler’s life is a powerful example of how God still speaks to the world. As a young missionary in Africa and later in the Philippines, she has faced many dangers and hardships, hearing God’s voice in all of them, guiding and leading her to the light.

It wasn’t always a loud voice. Sometimes, it was a quiet thought, a Bible verse that came to mind, or help arriving at just the right time. Yet, it changed the world for her and the people that she loved.

For example, when she was a new wife in Africa, she felt lonely and far from home. Noticing her yearning, God gave her a simple comfort that reminded her of home across the sea: a bar of Tide soap and a drink of Coca-Cola, familiar things from America that made her feel God’s intimate care.

“That day God showed me that, even in Africa, Tide soap and Coca-Cola were available to me for my use and enjoyment… I felt quite comforted in having something familiar from my own culture.”

It was a small sign that God saw her and was with her.

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. – Hebrews 11:1

God also speaks through protection: once, Virginia and her first husband, Tommy, were flying in a terrible storm, so awful in fact that their small plane went out of control, twisting toward the sea.

They prayed aloud, and—voila!—Tommy regained control just in time.

God had saved their lives. Through this, they learned that God had a plan for them. As the Bible says in Jeremiah, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans for welfare and not for calamity, to give you a future and a hope.”

God’s truth to a new generation includes the promise that He holds our future in His hands.

Teaching God’s Word Through Real Life

You don’t have to be a missionary in a jungle to hear God. Virginia has stories that teach us how to see God in everyday life—and it’s just all about learning to listen.

Teaching God’s word to the next generation is more than just reading the Bible; it is showing how the Bible’s promises come true in our lives.

When her first husband, Tommy, died in a plane crash, Virginia was only twenty with two small children. Her world had seemed to have ended then.

But in her deep sadness, God spoke, reminding her of words that her own mother had once said:

“God will never give you more than you can bear.”

Later, she found this same promise in the Bible: “God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able” (1 Corinthians 10:13): a message of God’s faithfulness in our deepest pain.

And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest. – Exodus 33:14

Years later, God led Virginia and her second husband, Les, to become missionaries, where they faced a huge ordeal during training in a remote mountain village.

They ran out of food with weeks to go.

Thus, they prayed, and God answered in amazing ways: a neighbor left green beans at their door while another friend shared chicken. A visiting pastor’s wife even sent a box of food from America that had exactly what they needed.

Virginia saw this as a holy meal from God, who showed them that “[He] is trustworthy. [He] is faithful. [He] is fair…”

This is the spiritual legacy we must pass on to the next generation of Christians: trust God, and He will provide.

Passing Faith to Youth

How do we make sure young people today know this God who speaks? The key is mentoring in faith by sharing stories that tell the great truth. Young people need to hear that faith is an adventure and a relationship with a God who acts for their betterment.

Virginia’s book is full of these fantastic adventures: from escaping swarms of driver ants in Africa to helping a blind woman see in the Philippines.

God was always at work.

Her stories are a great resounding answer to the question: “Is God still relevant?”

The answer, of course, is a loud “YES!”

Young adults face their own storms—confusion, fear, loneliness, and doubt and that’s why they need to know that the same God who guided a plane through a storm and fed hungry missionaries can guide them through college, career, and relationships.

He gives truth to a new generation facing new problems.

I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye. – Psalm 32:8

God wants to speak to you, too.

And you can start by praying simple, honest prayers and talking to Him about your day, your fears, and your dreams. Then, listen—listen when you read the Bible and listen to that quiet thought that encourages you to do the right thing while watching out for “coincidences” that help you at the perfect time.

These are often God’s ways of speaking to you, through the world about you.

Let Virginia Metzler’s book Our God Still Speaks inspire your own faith journey and see how God is revealing His truth to a new generation.
