The idea of building a relationship with God can feel big and complicated. But it is really about something simple and beautiful: talking to Him, listening for Him, and seeing His work in your everyday life. It is not about being perfect. It is about being connected.

Communing with God involves ongoing, intimate fellowship that goes beyond just knowing about Him to actively experiencing His presence. This connection changes everything.

O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is; —Psalm 63:1

God’s love and faithfulness are foundational to this communion, assuring His steadfast presence and care. It gives you peace when you are scared, strength when you are weak, and guidance when you are lost.

What is Communion with God?

Communion with God is a close, personal friendship with your Creator.

It is a two-way relationship where you share your heart with God and learn to recognize His voice in yours. God’s answers—whether through the Bible, dreams, visions, or personal experiences—are part of how He communicates and responds to His people.

He is not a distant force, for he is a loving Father who wants to be involved in the details of your life.

The author of Our God Still Speaks, Virginia Metzler, shows this through her own life. As a woman, Bible teacher, and discipler, Virginia’s experiences as a wife, mother, and spiritual leader have shaped her journey.

“As you read this book, my desire is that you will begin to see and experience God speaking to YOU in your own hearts and lives as well.”

Building a Relationship with God

Building a relationship with God is a journey that unfolds day by day, shaped by intentional choices and a heart that longs to be closer to Him. It’s about admitting our need for God’s strength and making space for His presence in the midst of our busy lives.

Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.–Psalm 46:10

Virginia Metzler is an author whose life and words inspire so many.

She is a living example of how a relationship with God brings happiness and fulfillment. From her early days in Houston, through her marriage to John Thomas (Tommy) Barnett, Jr., and later to Les Metzler, Virginia’s story is marked by God’s faithfulness and love.

Her journey—serving as a wife, mother, and friend, raising a family that includes a pre-med student and married children, and working in West Africa—shows how God’s answers and care are woven into the fabric of everyday life.

To build a strong relationship with God, it’s essential to set a spiritual order for your days.

God Provides in Our Need

A big part of communion with God is learning to trust Him for your needs. When you talk to Him about what you lack, you open the door for Him to provide in amazing ways.

Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?–Matthew 6:25

Virginia and her husband, Les, experienced this in a powerful way while training in a remote village. They were running out of food. All they had left was a little rice. They prayed together and asked God for help.

A short time later, people showed up with gifts of food. Through these acts of provision, God served their needs and added blessings to their lives as they trusted Him.

Looking at the feast God had provided, Virginia writes:

“It was apparent to me that the Lord had prepared a feast for us.”

God Fights Our Battles

Sometimes, the challenges we face are more than just physical needs. As believers, we face spiritual battles—times of fear, doubt, and opposition. In these moments, worship is a powerful weapon, and communion with God is our most outstanding defense. Christ is the ultimate source of victory in every spiritual warfare we encounter. As our Savior, Jesus Christ provides salvation, kindness, and transformation for all who believe in Him.

Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.–1 John 4:4

Virginia and Les faced a spiritual battle when they tried to teach adults in their village to read. They needed light for their classes, but their lanterns would not work. One night, two different lanterns caught fire. They realized this was not bad luck. It was a spiritual attack to keep people from reading God’s Word.

They decided to pray specifically against this dark force. The following week, they tried the lantern again. Virginia writes, “Our lantern burned brightly and without further incident. We praised God!”

Their persistent communion with God through prayer brought a victory that everyone could see.

A Lifetime of Growth with God

Communion with God is not a one-time event. It is a daily walk that lasts your whole life. A long life of faith and spiritual persistence is a divine blessing, reflecting God’s promise of enduring and abundant life for those who trust in Him. It is how you build a history with God. You will see His faithfulness over and over.

This builds a trust that can withstand any storm.

Virginia’s life is a testament to this.

From her early days in Africa to the tragic loss of her first husband, to the joyful struggle of adopting her daughter, she learned to rely on God and communicate with Him. Since then, she has experienced God’s love and faithfulness throughout her journey, feeling loved even in the most challenging times.

Her life stands as an example for others to follow, showing how a faithful walk with God leads to hope and the promise of being glorified in Him. “…God has taught me many things about Himself… God is trustworthy. God is faithful. God is fair. BELIEVE it! It is true!”

This deep, hard-won trust is the fruit of a life lived in close communion with God.

A Journey toward Communion

You do not need to be a missionary in a far-off country to experience this. Communion with God is available to you right where you are.

It starts with a simple prayer. Talk to Him about your day. Thank Him for something good. Ask Him for help with something hard. Open your Bible and read a few verses. Look for His hand at work in your life.

As Virginia’s stories show, God is not silent. He is ready and waiting to speak to you, provide for you, and walk with you through every moment.

If these stories have touched your heart, you can read many more in Virginia Stewart Metzler’s Our God Still Speaks: Real-life Stories of How God Answers Prayers.
